Freiburg im Breisgau Schlossberg – Travel Vignette
The views from the top of the Schlossberg in Freiburg are amazing! Just below us stretched vineyards, down the slope to apartment building balconies filling the valley below. On the other side, a medieval tower the Schwabentor and Freiburg with the Vosges mountains of France, off in the distance.
We had just rode an elevator, up through the rock, to get to the top of the Schlossberg. Our table at the beergarden was spread with sausages, pretzels, potato salad, fries, and of course beer. This was acquired from the self-serve line in the rear of the beergarden. Long picnic tables stretched out under the shade trees with televisions scattered throughout. All of the tables were full of lively patrons, including ours. We sat with others, as there was only three in our group. Eating and drinking at a table with strangers adds to the communal atmosphere.
The place was jam-packed, as there was a football match on the television. That’s soccer for us USA folks. Cheers rang out all around and everyone was enjoying themselves, included us, even though we didn’t have a team to cheer for. We were enjoying ourselves so much, the next thing we know the sun had set and it was well passed our bed time. We had plans to visit the black forest open air museum in Gutach the next day.
Dreams of visiting a beergarden in Germany had been in my head for years and the Schlossberg in Freiburg didn’t disappoint. If you have always dreamed of having a mass at a beergarden you can do it too! Go find a view! Make plans to visit a Beergarden!
